Original U.S. Army M1 helmet featuring a World War II-manufactured steel shell paired with a 1968 Marmac helmet liner, bearing distinctive Military Police markings attributed to the 524th Military Police Company (Corps), stationed at Fort Shafter, Hawaii.

This helmet represents the long service life of the American M1, combining WWII construction with Vietnam War-era components and markings associated with U.S. Army operations in the Pacific.

WWII Steel Helmet Shell

The steel shell features an original front-seam stainless steel rim and swivel chinstrap loops, characteristics associated with M1 helmets manufactured approximately late 1943 through 1944.

The shell retains an olive-drab finish with substantial wear, scratches, paint loss, and evidence of repainting during its service life. Faint remnants of yellow paint remain visible on the exterior, potentially corresponding to the Military Police markings on the liner.

The original manufacturer’s heat stamp is no longer legible.

1968 Marmac Military Police Liner

The accompanying liner is an original Vietnam-era M1 liner with an identified government contract:

LINER, SOLDIERS STEEL HELMET, M1

4 JUN 68

DSA-100-68-C-2560

The contract identifies Marmac, dated June 4, 1968. The liner retains its green cotton webbing suspension and brown leather sweatband.

The exterior features large yellow MP lettering, the number 524, blue-over-red identification bands, and the historic Hawaiian Department "Lazy H" insignia.

Historical Background: 524th Military Police Company

The markings strongly suggest an association with the 524th Military Police Company (Corps), which operated from Fort Shafter on Oahu, Hawaii, during the Cold War.

The July 1960 Military Police Journal featured the company in an article titled "MPs in the 50th State." Nicknamed the "Pupule Pineapple Police," the unit was commanded at that time by Captain Wiley T. Higgins Jr.

Its responsibilities included installation security, traffic enforcement, patrol duties, and military law enforcement throughout the Honolulu area, including Fort Shafter, Fort Ruger, Fort DeRussy, and other Army installations.

A firsthand account preserved by the U.S. Army's Tropic Lightning Museum further documents the company's operations at Fort Shafter between 1963 and 1965.

The liner's distinctive red octagonal insignia with a yellow stylized H represents the historic Hawaiian Department, originally adopted in the early 1920s. The eight sides symbolize Hawaii's principal islands, while the design reflects the Army's longstanding presence in the Pacific.

The combination of the 524 designation, Hawaiian insignia, and Military Police markings provides compelling evidence connecting this liner to the documented unit, although its specific service history cannot be conclusively established.

Condition

Original vintage condition with substantial age and service-related wear. The steel shell exhibits scratches, paint loss, and evidence of refinishing. The liner retains its suspension, leather sweatband, and recognizable painted insignia, with extensive chipping and surface wear.

The shell also retains traces of colored paint potentially matching the liner's markings, suggesting the two may have served together. However, their original pairing and the precise date of the painted markings remain unverified.

Includes the original WWII M1 steel shell with chinstrap and 1968 Marmac Military Police liner. Display mannequin not included.

A distinctive collectible combining WWII helmet construction, Vietnam-era equipment, and markings associated with the U.S. Army's historic Military Police presence in Hawaii.
