Authentic XM28E4 “Tunnel Rat” / “Grasshopper” gas mask, manufactured by Mine Safety Appliances (MSA) in 1969, complete with its original XM28E4 riot-control carrier.
The XM28 was developed during the Vietnam War to replace bulkier field masks like the M17 in roles requiring agility and low weight. Its primary purpose was protection from riot control agents (CS and CN gas) during tunnel-clearing, jungle operations, and civil disturbance response.
 
The lightweight rubber facepiece and translucent twin filter pods earned it the nickname “Grasshopper,” referencing its bug-like appearance when worn. Meanwhile, “Tunnel Rat” came from its field use by U.S. soldiers tasked with clearing Viet Cong tunnel systems—where maneuverability, low profile, and tear gas protection were essential.
 
This example is size Small (S10) and clearly stamped “69 MSA”, denoting Mine Safety Appliances manufacture in 1969. It retains its six-point elastic web harness, intact voice emitter, and cheek-mounted proprietary filter pods (filters not included). The rubber remains pliable, and the lenses show minor surface wear from age.
 
The included XM28E4 carrier is the correct, purpose-built vinyl-backed canvas pouch, marked “FOR USE IN RIOT CONTROL AGENTS ONLY.” It features snap closure, belt hooks, and internal coating for chemical resistance—exactly as issued.
 
A rare and historically important piece of Vietnam War equipment, the XM28 remains a standout collectible due to its limited production and experimental design.
