Michigan Lands Major Army Agreement to Keep the Abrams Tank Running

The M1 Abrams has been one of the most recognizable American fighting vehicles for more than four decades. Beneath its armor, however, is something unusual for a main battle tank: a 1,500-horsepower gas turbine engine. Now, Michigan is playing a major role in keeping that engine viable.
On September 14, 2026, the Army awarded the National Advanced Mobility Consortium (NAMC) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, an Other Transaction Authority agreement with a ceiling of $2.5 billion to enhance the AGT1500 gas turbine engine that powers the M1 Abrams fleet. Work under the agreement is expected to continue through March 14, 2029.
The Army obligated approximately $11.83 million in fiscal 2026 research, development, test and evaluation funding at the time of the award. In other words, the $2.5 billion figure represents the maximum potential value of the agreement rather than a $2.5 billion check being handed over immediately.
The contracting activity is also located in Michigan: Army Contracting Command at Detroit Arsenal. For Michigan's defense industry, it is another connection to a vehicle that has deep roots in the state. But the more interesting question may be why an engine designed for a tank that entered service in 1980 still needs this much attention.
The Abrams Doesn't Have a Normal Diesel Engine

Most people expect a tank to be powered by an enormous diesel engine. The Abrams is different. The M1 family uses the AGT1500, a gas turbine engine producing approximately 1,500 horsepower. The concept is closer to the basic operating principle behind aircraft turbine engines than the piston engines found in most trucks and automobiles. Air enters the engine and is compressed, fuel is introduced and burned, and the expanding gases drive turbine stages that ultimately produce mechanical power.
The result is an enormous amount of power from a relatively compact powerplant.
Army documentation has long listed the Abrams' powerplant at 1,500 horsepower, and Army depot testing of rebuilt AGT1500s has required engines to produce roughly 1,425 to 1,525 shaft horsepower before being returned to service.
That power helps move a vehicle weighing well over 60 tons. And that was one of the major reasons a turbine made sense when the Abrams was being developed.
Why Put a Turbine in a Tank?
The Abrams emerged from a period when the Army wanted a main battle tank with exceptional mobility despite increasingly heavy armor. A gas turbine offered several attractive characteristics.
It could produce tremendous horsepower for its size. It operated smoothly compared with many large piston engines. It could provide strong acceleration for a vehicle of extraordinary weight. The engine could also operate using different fuels, an important characteristic for a military that has to keep vehicles running under conditions far removed from civilian infrastructure.
The result helped give the Abrams a power-to-weight ratio and level of mobility that were remarkable for a heavily armored vehicle.
Army descriptions of the M1A1 emphasized that combination: heavy protection, a 120mm main gun and a 1,500-horsepower turbine giving the vehicle the mobility necessary to move rapidly across the battlefield. But turbines also come with tradeoffs.
The Abrams Engine Has Always Had a Reputation
Ask people familiar with the Abrams about its turbine and two characteristics tend to come up quickly. Power and fuel consumption.
The AGT1500 can move an extraordinarily heavy vehicle with impressive speed, but feeding a turbine-powered tank creates a substantial logistical burden. An armored formation doesn't merely need ammunition and replacement parts. It needs an enormous and dependable fuel supply following closely behind it.
There is also the problem of age. The basic Abrams platform entered Army service decades ago. Engines, transmissions and components have been rebuilt repeatedly as vehicles have been upgraded from one configuration to another. Keeping those systems operational becomes increasingly difficult when parts suppliers disappear, manufacturing processes change and components originally designed decades ago become harder to obtain. That is where the Army's current effort becomes particularly interesting.
The Army Is Trying to Strengthen the AGT1500 Supply Chain
The September agreement did not appear out of nowhere. The Army has already been working with industry through an effort called TIGER (Total Integrated Engine Revitalization) focused specifically on the AGT1500. In July 2026, Army Contracting Command-Detroit Arsenal announced the second phase of a TIGER industry effort aimed at the Abrams engine.
Companies had been given access to AGT1500 engines and components, allowed to physically inspect them, speak with subject-matter experts and identify critical or single-source components they believed they could manufacture or supply.
The Army then asked participating vendors to move beyond simply saying we could make this. It wanted production roadmaps, technical execution plans, and qualification requirements. Plus, it wanted timelines for actually producing components. That gives us a better picture of what “enhancing” the AGT1500 may involve. This isn't necessarily about inventing an entirely new engine. A huge part of the challenge is ensuring that the United States can continue manufacturing, repairing and supporting the engine already powering the Abrams fleet.

The Problem With Keeping 40-Year-Old Equipment Alive
Military equipment can remain useful for an extraordinarily long time.
That doesn't mean supporting it is easy. Imagine trying to maintain a vehicle built around thousands of components designed during the 1970s and 1980s. Some original manufacturers no longer exist. Production tooling may have disappeared. A supplier that once manufactured thousands of a particular component may have stopped producing it decades ago. Materials change. Manufacturing standards change. Technical knowledge disappears as workers retire.
Eventually, something as seemingly insignificant as one unavailable component can create a readiness problem for an entire weapons system.
The Army's TIGER effort specifically identifies critical and single-source components as areas of interest. Finding additional manufacturers capable of producing those components gives the Army alternatives when an aging supply chain begins to fail.
Rebuilding Abrams Engines Is Already a Major Operation
The Army has maintained infrastructure specifically dedicated to rebuilding and testing AGT1500 engines. At Anniston Army Depot in Alabama, turbine engines have historically gone through a dedicated overhaul and testing process. When the depot installed updated AGT1500 dynamometer test cells, Army officials described testing rebuilt engines across their operating range to ensure they met the performance requirements necessary to return to service. The engines had to produce approximately 1,425 to 1,525 shaft horsepower during testing.
That illustrates an important point about military vehicles. A tank isn't simply manufactured and driven until it wears out. Major components can be removed, rebuilt, tested and returned to the fleet repeatedly. The vehicle that emerges from an overhaul may contain a mixture of original structures, rebuilt components and newly manufactured replacement parts. That process can keep a platform operational far beyond what most civilian vehicles would ever experience.
Michigan and the Abrams Have a Long History
The Michigan connection goes considerably deeper than this week's agreement. The Detroit area has been central to American armored-vehicle development and production for generations. Historic Army documentation for the Abrams lists General Dynamics Land Systems in Sterling Heights, Michigan, among the program's major contractors.
Today, Army Contracting Command-Detroit Arsenal continues to oversee major armored-vehicle programs from Michigan. The September AGT1500 agreement was issued through that command, while the National Advanced Mobility Consortium receiving the agreement is based in Ann Arbor. That means both sides of this particular agreement have significant Michigan connections. For a state famous for building automobiles, involvement in America's armored-vehicle industrial base is hardly new.

Why Not Just Replace the Abrams?
That question has followed the Abrams for years. At some point, wouldn't it be easier to build an entirely new tank? Eventually, perhaps. But replacing a main battle tank is far more complicated than designing a better vehicle. An army has to consider training, ammunition, spare parts, maintenance facilities, transport equipment, recovery vehicles, simulators, depot infrastructure and an enormous supply chain built around the existing platform. Thousands of people already know how to operate and maintain the Abrams. Infrastructure already exists to support it. And despite its age, the platform has been repeatedly upgraded rather than remaining frozen in its original 1980 configuration. That makes continued modernization attractive.
Instead of throwing away the entire system, the Army can improve armor, electronics, sensors, communications, weapons and automotive components as technology advances.
The engine supply chain is simply another part of that equation.
A $2.5 Billion Ceiling Doesn't Mean $2.5 Billion Has Been Spent
The headline number deserves another explanation because large defense awards are frequently misunderstood. The September 14 agreement has a ceiling of $2.5 billion. That means work conducted under the agreement can potentially reach that amount. It does not mean $2.5 billion was immediately obligated. At the time of the award, the Army obligated $11,831,430 in fiscal 2026 research, development, test and evaluation funding.
Future projects and funding could increase the total substantially as work proceeds. The agreement is scheduled to run through March 2029. How much of the full ceiling is ultimately used will depend on what work the Army orders under it.
The Abrams Is Becoming a Lesson in Military Longevity
The AGT1500 story is about more than an engine. It demonstrates what happens when a successful military platform remains in service for decades. Eventually, modernization isn't simply about installing newer technology. It becomes about preserving the industrial ability to manufacture the old technology that still works.
The Abrams may look radically different from the original M1s that entered service more than four decades ago, but one thing has remained remarkably consistent: At its heart is still a 1,500-horsepower gas turbine. The Army's new agreement in Ann Arbor suggests the United States intends to keep that turbine, and the industrial base behind it, running for years to come.
And once again, Michigan will have a hand in keeping America's tanks moving.
