Vintage USGI M-1951 Fishtail Parka w/ Heavy Wool Liner & Fur-Ruff Hood
This is an original U.S. Army M-1951 Fishtail Parka, complete with its button-in wool liner and detachable fur-ruff hood, all authentic early-1950s issue components from the Korean War period.Designed for cold-weather operations, the M-1951 was the Army’s first fully modular parka system, consisting of a durable cotton sateen shell, a wool-blend liner, and a fur-trimmed hood. Together, these components provided soldiers with layered protection against the harsh Korean winters.
The shell is the standard-issue olive green (OG-107) parka body, made from wind- and water-resistant cotton sateen. It features a brass Talon zipper, button storm flap, two large front hand pockets, adjustable cuffs, and a split fishtail hem with snap closure. The waist drawcord is missing, though the remainder of the jacket remains structurally sound with all other original components intact.Inside is the correct button-in liner, manufactured by Spruce Products, Inc., marked “60% Wool / 40% Cotton.” It attaches securely via the interior button system, providing substantial insulation while remaining breathable.
The hood is a genuine M-1951 Hudson Garment Co. contract piece dated April 6, 1953, featuring a natural wool-blend fur ruff and red-ink printed instructions. The fur retains its original color and texture, and the hood buttons directly to the parka shell as designed.
This example is marked size Large (Chest from 41”), suitable for wear over layered field uniforms. A classic and highly collectible piece of U.S. Army cold-weather gear, representing the transition between World War II and Cold War design.
