Vietnam Era XM28E4 “Tunnel Rat” Gas Mask 1969 MSA Medium w/ Riot Control Carrier
Authentic Vietnam War-era XM28E4 “Grasshopper” gas mask, manufactured by Mine Safety Appliances (MSA) in 1969. This model was specifically developed for use by U.S. troops operating in confined environments such as tunnels, offering a more compact and lightweight alternative to the standard-issue M17 mask.
This example retains its original XM28E4 riot-control carrier, correctly marked “FOR USE IN RIOT CONTROL AGENTS ONLY.” The mask features the distinctive low-profile design with internal cheek filters and a flexible rubber body, making it one of the more unique and recognizable U.S. military respirators of the Vietnam era.
Condition is good overall with typical signs of age and storage. The lenses show visible scratches but remain intact. The rubber body is still pliable, and the harness system is present and functional. The carrier shows expected wear from use and storage.
A solid, complete Vietnam-era display piece with strong collector appeal, especially due to its association with specialized units such as Tunnel Rats.
